February 20: National Love Your Pet Day
Today is a day to celebrate the furry, feathered, or scaled friends out there that we share our lives with, who provide unconditional love and joy. It’s February 20, and today is National Love Your Pet Day.
Humans have created a type of partnership of affection with animals for thousands of years. While we can’t know for sure what animal exactly made the first pet, it was the evolution of the wolf that has made the most dramatic impact to the world. According to a Gallup poll, 60% of Americans have pets, with dogs making up 40% of the pet type. Cats, at 25%, have also been known to be revered in ancient cultures, including ancient Egypt who were mummified along with their human companions. As far back as 12,000 years ago, both cats and dogs were found to be buried in graves.
Over time, that love for pets has grown even more. Whether that pet is a cat, dog, fish, snake or bird, we love spoiling our pets. From giving them toys, treats, or letting them sleep in bed with us, they undeniably bring a positive force in our lives.
So today is a day to give your pet an extra dose of affection as gratitude for all of the joy and happiness that they bring to you. Don’t have a pet? Well, perhaps today is the perfect day to rescue one. Head to your local animal shelter or contact a local rescue organization to give a home to an animal in need. You won’t regret it!
